Attendance
College requirement is that you are allowed to miss the number of times your class meets in two weeks. For example, if your section is a MWF class, then you are allowed 6 absences without penalty. For a TR class, you are allowed 4 absences without penalty.
If you miss in excess of this, 2 points will be deducted from your final grade for each absence in excess of the number given above for a MWF class; 3 points will be deducted per excess absence for a TR class. (Example, if your class meets MWF, and you miss 8 days, your final grade will be docked 4 points.) If you miss double the number of allowable absences under the college requirement, you will be dropped from the class with an F.
Summer session: (10 week session, TR class) You can miss 3 days without penalty. The 4th and 5th absence will result in 4 points subtracted from your final grade apiece. If you miss more than 5 absences, you will be dropped from the class with an F.
*It is your responsibility to make sure that I mark you as present if you enter class after the roll has been called. If for any reason you must drop the class, let me know and I will drop you with a "W", which does not adversely affect your GPA.
Grading
There are a total of 4 exams, including a cumulative final. The lowest midterm exam grade is dropped. Therefore, three exams count toward your final grade, equally weighted at 25% each (total 75%). [Final exam may be exempted if you have an "A" average in the class.]
Makeup policy: You can makeup a missed midterm exam only if (a) you already missed one exam (the grade that will be dropped), and (b) you have a doctor's excuse or other verifiable dire circumstance.
The syllabus requires that a term paper be done that counts 15% of the course grade.
Homework is meant to help you with the material, but the homework grading scale is also weighted to help your grade. Do not minimize the importance of doing the homework assignments! This is 10% of your grade.
Homework grading scale: graded on a 4-point scale. 0 = 0 1 = 65 1.5 = 70 2 = 75 2.5 = 80 3 = 85 3.5 = 90 4 = 100
