THE NEWSOM - NEWSOME FAMILY GENEALOGYAND HISTORY

Hoard Newsome

The Newsom Family is first mentioned in 1066 in England and continuity established from the 1400's at Newsham Hall in Lancashire, with William Newsham as it was then spelled. Then a William Newsom left London, England on August 21, 1635 on the ship "George" for Virginia which was only 27 years after it was first settled. According to the records William was granted 550 acres of land on May 3, 1636, "in the County of James City toward Sunken Marsh," for the transportation of 11 persons to the Colony of Virgina. This patent was renewed Aug 26, 1643 (Grant Book 1 p. 338, Va. Land Office). The land fell into Surry County in the formation of that county. Later references to this land owned by William Newsom called it "Rich Neck." Details of "Rich Neck" are included in the book.

The family grew and spread in Surry, to Southampton, Isle of Wight, Sussex, Brunswick and Dinwittie counties of Virginia; also to North Carolina counties of Hertford, Northampton, Edgecombe, Forsyth, Wayne, Halifax, Randolph, Stokes and Yadkin; in Georgia to the counties of Wilkes, Warren, Green and Morgan; to Kentucky to the county of Pike; to Arkansas; to Texas; to Ohio; to Iowa as well as Kansas.

In 1817 Daniel and Joel Newsom, living in Wayne county of North Carolina, went on a prospecting trip to Orange, Wayne and Bartholomew counties in Indiana and the following year Daniel, Joel, Willis, David and John Newsom families finally settled in Bartholomew county near Columbus even laying out the town of Azalia. This branch of the family were Quakers and were leaders of the Quaker settlement in Indiana. Other families who intermarried with the Newsom's were: Barham, Belk, Bickerton, Carter, Cox, Crump, Davis, Day, Engle, Graves, Hall, Horton, Jernigan, Lassiter, Lewis, Lincoln, Mitchell, Morris, Nair, Parker, Ruddick, Ruffin, Sims, Smith, Stephenson, Taylor, Vason, Vick and Woodard.
