It is important to note that these charts are standardized and normalized. That's just a jargonish way of saying that I have 'migrated' each players' performance into what I call 'The Age of Standard Baseball.' That age is a composite of a couple of years in the early-to-mid 1970s along with a season from the 1950s. Why did I deem these seasons to be 'The Age of Standard Baseball?' Well, those happen to be about the most average seasons (based on slugging percentage + on base average) in the history of baseball. So, Mark McGwire won't have a chart capable of hitting 70 dingers. Likewise, Ty Cobb will be something of a slugger, due to the fact that he led the league in homers once and was near the top many times. If he'd had the chance to play with clean white, non-waterlogged baseballs, maybe he'd have joined the 40-40 club. A couple of anomalies are that pitchers from Way Back When don't have killer charts and have fairly poor 'Tire' numbers. This is due to the fact that pitchers didn't exceed or fall below the norm by much back before the turn of the century. Hell, most teams used only one starting pitcher, so there wasn't exactly a lot to compare against in the entire league. Furthermore, a pitcher was expected to finish a game, so averaging 8.5 innings per game was no big deal. If a pitcher's arm turned to mush, he just lobbed the ball up and hoped for a second wind (or that his team could tally more runs than the pitcher were giving up).
