Sports Illustrated Baseball (a.k.a. Superstar Baseball)
Welcome to the home page of Sports Illustrated Baseball and the World Boardgaming Championships' Superstar Baseball tournament.

While this web page was created to assist in running the annual championship tournament, I've included even more information about the greatest baseball game ever created. I've played it since 1973 and I periodically create new charts. Well, rather than recap everything right here, click around and explore for yourself.
2002 WBC Tournament - This year, for the first time in awhile, we will have each manager with a different historic team. One may have the '27 Yanks and another may have the '79 Pirates. Each team will have a handicap rating and the higher-rated team will have to forfeit a few outs to make the games more equitable.
So, for managers who contact me (randycox@innova.net) prior to June 1, you can give me a list of five teams (1900-1999 only) that you want. I'll evaluate (first come, first served, except that past champions get first dibs) the lists and dole out teams (though no single franchise will be allowed to have teams within 4 years of each other--ie, no 29 and 31 Athletics). Around the start of June, I'll post which teams are taken. Submissions after that date will be done first-come, first-served, as I get the time to create the charts.
Good luck.
Update, 7/2/2002: The charts are ready. That doesn't mean they're printed on cardstock and cut apart, but they're finished. So, those of you who "preregistered" can get a copy via mail if you send me your postal mailing address. Also, there is now a list of all rosters. For those who want to see all the teams, click on this link. The rosters show the top 16 (or less) position players, listed by plate appearances. The top 9 (or less) pitchers are generally listed by the top 5 starters (most games started), the top 3 relievers (most games relieved), and the one remaining pitcher with the most innings pitched. Preceding each player's name is a number (e.g. 3-Joe Schmoe). That number is their "value." Also, each team has a handicap list (e.g. Bluebirds H:3 B:9 P:2 F:1). The H number is the team's handicap (the number of outs they must give up each game against a zero-handicap team, the B is their batting rating, P is their pitching rating, and F is their fielding rating.
Here's the list of managers who pre-selected a team:
Mike Hazel - 1986 Mets
Carl Coscia - 1927 Yankees
Mike Mularski - 1984 Tigers
Bill Beckman - 1948 Indians
Bob Jamelli - 1936 Yankees (but Carl has said he can't make it, so the '27 Yanks are yours if you ask)
John Emery - 1984 Cubs
Ken Samuel - 1980 Phillies
Bruce Young - 1994 Braves
Joe Haardt - 1931 A's
Jared Scarborough - 1971 Giants

If I got any of these selections wrong, please contact me ASAP (randycoxclemson@yahoo.com).
